Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder in which a person is unable to stop breathing during sleep. The difficulty in breathing may be audible or non-existent. People who suffer from this disorder will usually awaken in the middle of the night gasping for air.

Sleep apnea can be caused by many factors. One is snoring. Others include loud snoring, obesity, aging, and physical illness.

If you suffer from this disorder on a regular basis, your doctor can recommend a CPAP machine or a continuous positive airway pressure machine (CPAP). A CPAP machine is a nasal mask, or a bag-like apparatus, that expands and contracts when a person sleeps. The mask helps to open the airways during sleep. This improves the chances of someone with sleep apnea to wake up breathing again and resume normal sleep.

If a person with sleep apnea wakes up gasping for air, they are generally too tired to breathe properly and wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air. Since this is all too common, doctors use an oral medication to reduce the amount of sleep apnea medications required. While these medications can help with sleep apnea, they don’t cure the problem itself.

Doctors sometimes recommend surgery to treat sleep apnea. Surgery involves the insertion of a mask into the throat. During surgery, the throat and the chest muscles are closed off to restrict the airway. For those who have any serious sleep apnea, surgery may be the only treatment option.

Most types of sleep apnea are treated with medications. These medications, such as dopamine agonists, nitrous oxide, or alpha-2 adrenergic agonists, either prevent the body from producing a hormone called hypocretin or produce a controlled amount of the hormone that helps prevent episodes of sleep apnea.

The most common side effects of sleep apnea drugs are loss of weight and a decrease in blood pressure. Some people may also experience certain side effects including allergic reactions, dizziness, depression, or difficulty concentrating. These side effects typically occur within two weeks of starting the medication.

A home sleep study is often recommended to determine the best method of treatment for sleep apnea. The study usually involves checking oxygen saturation, heart rate, body temperature, and sleeping positions. In some cases, the sleep study may also involve evaluating the health of the patient.

There are several methods that have been used to treat sleep apnea. The most effective method so far is the CPAP device. It is a medical appliance that delivers a regulated flow of pressurized air to help someone with apnea stop breathing during sleep.

It is important to note that while sleep apnea is treatable, it can also cause other serious conditions. Examples of such conditions include high blood pressure, hypothyroidism, and heart problems. Talk to your doctor if you believe you might have sleep apnea.

In some cases, your doctor may decide that your sleep apnea treatment is not right for you. A sleep study will let him or her know about your condition, so he or she can make a more informed decision about the treatment you need.
